Our son was in the hospital for the last couple of days, getting tested for seizure-like episodes he has been experiencing after some concussions last year. He was hooked up to an EEG with the nodes glued to his scalp for more than 48 hours, in hopes of capturing an episode. We don’t have any new information yet, it will take time for the doctor to view all that data, but we are hopeful to learn something from this experience. And yet, I already have….
Our son is the easy-going one of our family, even keeled and on good terms with everyone. I had the…um…privilege of being with him for the duration of the hospital visit, and can say that I have a few things to learn from this kid.
Although it was itchy and uncomfortable, he never complained about the head wrap he had to wear, and only made fun of it.
Although he wasn’t allowed to leave the bed except to go to the restroom for more than two days, he never complained about being cooped up.
Although his parents were getting more and more agitated by the lack of communication with the doctor and hospital staff, he was the one calming us down and asking us to cool off.
There are more illustrations from the time that I spent with him, but I hope you can see the pattern here. Sometimes it’s difficult for me to remain even-tempered in the best of circumstances, and I have this example right in my immediate family of a better way to behave. Unfortunately, it took an extreme situation for me to learn from it.
Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. Philippians 2:14-16
He sounds like a funny guy. I hope everything works out well.
Thank you for the verse and such a great example. It was an a blessed reminder for me today. When I ‘hold firmly to the word of life’ it is easier not to grumble and become ‘blameless and pure’. I will go and have my devotional right now. Thank you
