Where Are You?

I had the privilege of sitting down to dinner with a wise couple recently, just the three of us. They know that my guy and I lead the couple’s ministry at our church and are passionate about transforming marriages. In the course of our conversation the two shared with me some of their thoughts on a successful marriage/spiritual life/outlook.

I was told that it all goes back to Genesis, when the man and woman had sinned and realized their nakedness. Up until this time, they had been walking with their Creator in His creation. Now, after tasting sin, they hid from the One who had formed and fashioned them. God asked a gentle question, “Where are you?” and the man gave a pithy response, filled with finger pointing and the woman did something very similar. Why did God ask them where they were? Didn’t He know? Of course He did. But did they know where they had gotten themselves?

The point is that we should be always asking, ‘Where am I?’ Or, another way to say it, ‘What time is it?’ It is our responsibility to know the time and the place. Where are we headed? What is our goal? Where is my head at this time? How about my heart? Are my actions reflecting these answers?

This special couple has impacted our marriage over the years, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to grow under their guidance. It is my hope that you have at least one  couple in your life that can speak wisdom and truth into your marriage and your personal walk with Christ, as well. If not, what would it take to make this happen?

 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” Genesis 3:6-10
