A Lesson in the Comics

Recently I read a quick article about an amazing thing that happened 50 years ago; most folks realize that back in 1968 African American people were segregated from Caucasians in many public spaces, and the work of  Martin Luther King Jr brought to light so much hatred and fear in our country. At the time... Continue Reading →

Diving In

It's a hot summer morning, you can already hear the cicadas buzzing and almost see the humidity hanging in the air. The year is 1978, August in Alabama and I am at the community pool with my brother. We stand in a group at the gate, waiting to be let in as the pool opens... Continue Reading →

Gluten Free Banana Nut Pancakes

Two of my dearest friends came for a visit last weekend, it’s amazing what a few hours of intense laughter and intentional conversation can do for the soul. My job was to bring the nourishment, and one of my friends is totally gluten-free. I wanted to have the classic comfort breakfast of pancakes and bacon,... Continue Reading →

Shrimp Avocado Salad

I saw this recipe within my photos on my phone, I often snap pics of of food ideas to try later. Unfortunately I didn’t get the website in the picture, and I can’t find it when I search, so I can’t give credit for the recipe. I made this for lunch yesterday and had a... Continue Reading →

What Mess?

We are in the middle of a major house renovation. Maybe major isn't the accurate term, but for a couple who has never done this, it feels significant. In the next few weeks we will have new wood flooring installed, new cabinets and paint, new appliances. The works. Meanwhile, in order to get ready for... Continue Reading →

So Real

I went to the community center to work out last week, I don't have a set schedule that I keep, so sometimes I work out first thing in the morning but I'm more likely to find my way there mid-morning or right at lunchtime. If I wait till much later in the day, I can talk myself... Continue Reading →

Your Move

In the early years of our marriage I had the ability to run a gamut of emotions in the first hour of the day; my guy never knew what to expect because I could show signs of bitterness and frustration and enthusiasm and charm without thinking about it. I believed it was my right to do this,... Continue Reading →

All Day in Bed

Sounds glorious, right? It's on the list of things the experts say to do for your marriage; get a hotel room and stay in bed all day. We went one step further, flying to a romantic city in Spain first. Except there was a catch, we were forced to spend the day in bed because... Continue Reading →
