I’m not ready for lessons tonight, I didn’t practice much this week. Can I skip?” No.
“I’m exhausted from all the homework I had last night, can I go in late today?” No.
“My teachers allow us to have smart phones to use in class. Can I get one?” Are you kidding me?!
These are questions I have been asked by my teens in the past couple of weeks.
Parents, I beg you to say no to your children. Like you, I love to give my kids what they need and want, and sometimes what they need is ‘no’ or ‘not yet’.
Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him? Matthew 7:9-11
True words indeed! I used to think I had the world’s strictest parents. However, as an adult and now a mother myself, I am glad they often denied my requests. Parents can often see what we can’t see. Saying “no” to their desires is sometimes the same as saying “yes” to their safety and success. Love your thoughts- keep them coming!
So much like our Heavenly Father, isn’t it? I think parenting has helped me to understand ‘Him’ better than any other role so far. Thanks so much for your encouragement.
